LITERATURE
Goal
The goal of this class is to help every student become a skilled, passionate reader, and develop critical thinking skills.
HOW DO YOU GET BETTER AT READING?
"The more you read, the better you get at it,
the better you get at it, the more you like it,
and the more you like it, the more you do it.
The more you read, the more you know; and the more you know; the smarter you grow."
From The Read Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease
Overview
The Pearson Common Core Literature series is used as a basis for instruction in literature class. Students are also given the opportunity for weekly independent reading time. Novels are studied throughout the year focusing on literature concepts found in the Common Core State Standards including The Lottery Rose by Irene Hunt, Animal Farm by George Orwell, excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank by Anne Frank, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, and Hiroshima by John Hersey. The class consists of reading, discussing, and writing. A link to the Common Core State Standards for eighth grade literature can be found here
Assessments
Quizzes
Quizzes are given after each short story read and discussed in class. All quizzes are multiple choice and Common Core aligned.
Benchmark Tests
Benchmark tests are given twice during a unit (once halfway through and once at the end of the unit). Benchmark tests assess the students' knowledge of the reading skills focused on in class, not the content of the stories. Benchmark tests are multiple choice and sometimes consist of a short essay question at the end. These assessments are the best indicators of Common Core skill mastery.
Novel Study
Reading check quizzes and a final test are given for all novels studied.
