Goal
The goal of this class is to improve written communication skills through understanding the conventions of language.
Overview
The eighth grade language arts curriculum consists of three components: grammar, writing, and speaking. Schoolwide Writing Fundamentals is used as a basis for instruction. All class activities, assignments, and assessments are aligned to the Common Core State Standards, which can be found here
Grammar
-Daily MUG shot sentences
-Weekly MUG shot quizzes
-Additional nightly practice expected
Writing Workshop
-Common Core State Standard aligned writing units include How Writers Work, Argumentative Essay, Multi-Genre Memoir, and Research Report
-Writers' Workshop includes daily instruction, writing, sharing, and conferencing
-Writing Process include Immersion, Generating Ideas, Selecting, Collecting, Drafting, Revising, Editing, Publishing, and Self-Reflection
Speaking
-One formal persuasive speech focused on standards from Common Core Speaking and Listening

-Includes Purpose/Meaning, Structure/Organization, Craft/Style, and Conventions
